Recently, a Critical Care Nurse Manager at one of Language of Caring’s client facilities made a public statement in a code debriefing (where the outcome of the code was not successful and frustrations were running high) that during a code is not the time or place to use Language of Caring skills. Leadership Accountability for Double Standards vs. “Do As I Say, Not As I Do”

Lack of leadership accountability (ie. double standards) breeds resentment and low morale. When we raise standards for employee behavior, employees are quick to notice whether senior leaders are modeling these higher standards in their own behavior. When the answer is NO, the champions for change among us become drained, but we encourage people to make the changes anyway “because it’s the right thing to do.” Still, it’s an uphill battle. Imagine if leadership teams could say with integrity, “Do as I do.”
